Dangerous Things We Tell Ourselves That Keep Us Stuck
Dangerous Things We Tell Ourselves: Have you ever caught yourself thinking about someone and they call? Or have you ever thought to yourself “This is going a little too well,” and then something bad happens?
I’m Jana Hennemann, and today we are talking about dangerous things we tell ourselves that keep us unsuccessful.
Now, what do I mean by unsuccessful? That is entirely up to you. What does success look like for you?
Most people have a different definition of success. Not everyone wants the same things. Not everyone wants the same car, the same career, the same spouse.
So before we delve into this topic, write down what success looks like for you in these areas of life: and FYI, I’d give each topic a couple of pages:
Career
Relationship
Family
Health
Personal (being house, car, toys, etc)
(You may want to pause this part of the video)
Now, when you look at each one of these topics and what you consider “successful” how do you feel? What do you tell yourself? Is it viable? Tangible? Within reach? Or does it feel like it’s way off in the distance?
We’ll dive deeper into this in future videos, for now, let’s focus on the thoughts you have and what you tell yourself that keeps you stuck.
After all, if you hold a thought long enough, it becomes denser and turns into an emotion. You hold an emotion long enough, and you train your brain to pick up those bits of information in your life. Hold that long enough, it turns into reality.
We talk about the science of this in our past video, Pink Elephants and Training Your Brain. Be sure to check it out.
MOVING ON!
Here are some thoughts you may think or have, thoughts you may tell yourself that keep you stuck:
- Low Teachability Index (also in a past video)
Thinking things like,“I know that already” or “I don’t know where to start so I won’t” or
“I don’t want to learn from you,” or
“We’ve always done it this way,” are all indicators of a low teachability index.
These thoughts keep you stuck right where you are. You aren’t teachable – your willingness to learn and willingness to change is very low or nonexistent. This is one of the many dangerous things we tell ourselves that keep us stuck!
When you notice these thoughts coming up, replace them with
“I am open to learning something new,”
“If I knew where to start, I’d start here,”
- Arguing for Your Limitations:
“My competitor isn’t doing well in this market either” or
“The economy is crap – that’s why we aren’t having a good year,” or
“I don’t have the money to do that”
“I’m just unlucky” or “I don’t have your luck,”
Arguing for your limitations is a way of playing the victim and justifying why you are where you are.
When you are aware you are having these thoughts, replace them with
“I can find a way to get that”
“I don’t have to have a slow period in my business”
“Surely other businesses have succeeded during a crap economy”
“I’m getting luckier and luckier every day”
Regardless where your thoughts come from – core memories of worthlessness or trauma – you can change them as they reveal themselves to you.
Sure, there are ways, therapies, facilitations to get to the root cause of why we think this way, and we will probably get into that in future videos – or not… I haven’t decided…
but starting with being aware of your thoughts is monumental. HUGE! Most people don’t pay attention and then wonder why they haven’t achieved what they wanted to achieve.
Be aware of your thoughts and replace them. Rudimentary, I know. But mastery requires mastering the basics.

I’ll see you this time next week!
About We&Co Huddles
We&Co is a professional co-oping & professional networking business that was founded in Springfield, Missouri in 2020. While there are many professional networking groups in and around the United States, We&Co focuses on creating small industry-specific groups with five to ten professionals who all have the same target audience but offer different products and services.
In essence, professionals come to us when they want to save time while making more money. These industry-specific groups are essential pods of professionals surrounded by their ideal referral partners.
These small groups of referral partners (called “Huddles) meet up twice a month for an hour and talk strategy on how to become that one-stop-shop for their clients. If you are a professional who is interested in joining or launching your own We&Co co-op (or “Huddle” as we like to call them), feel free to email us here and remember to sign up for a FREE 14-day trial (no credit card details needed).
